Record screen

The job is the picture on the monitor, turned into a file. A bug you can send. A demo of a click path. A meeting you were allowed to keep. Install, then record screen

Paste this into Windows Terminal or Command Prompt:

winget install -e --id ShareX.ShareX

If winget is missing, install App Installer from Microsoft, then paste the command again. Official Microsoft links only. The id is ShareX.ShareX. GitHub Releases is the other fetch: setup x64 exe for most PCs, portable x64 zip if you do not want an installer. Live tag observed: v21.0.0. File list sits on Screen recorder releases. How to record screen on this PC

1. Install ShareX with the command on this page, or pick the setup x64 exe from GitHub Releases.
2. Open ShareX.
3. Start Screen recording from the capture menu. Bind a hotkey in Hotkey settings if you want one. We do not invent the default combination.
4. Pick the area: a rectangle, a window, or a monitor. Start. The first record screen run may fetch FFmpeg. Let that finish.
5. Stop. Open the file from the output folder or from History. Play it. If the picture is the wrong rectangle, record ten seconds again with a tighter region.

That list is the record screen path. The display never has to leave this PC. After capture tasks can upload if you turn that on. Leave them on save-to-disk until you mean to send a file.

What you select when you record screen

Full monitor is the blunt take. Every notification will be in the file. A region is the usual demo: drag around the window that matters, leave the clock and the slack sidebar out. A window pick is for one app if that mode is in the menu you opened. Record screen is not "the whole desk unless you forgot." Choose before you hit start.

Cursor is part of the picture. If you are teaching a click, keep the cursor visible. If you are capturing a video already playing, the cursor is noise. Check the recording options for cursor and for frame rate before a long take. A 60 fps capture of a static settings panel is wasted disk. A 15 fps capture of a game is a slideshow. Match the motion.

Stop is as important as start. End the take when the demo ends. Trim later if you must, but a clean stop saves you a second program. The file name will usually include a timestamp. Rename it once you know what the take was.

Audio, file type, and the output folder

Record screen can be silent. That is valid. System audio is for a tutorial that plays a clip. Microphone is for a voiceover. Both is for a call you were allowed to keep. Pick devices in recording options. Test ten seconds. A mute take of a one-hour talk is the expensive mistake.

The container is whatever ShareX is set to write, often mp4 once FFmpeg is in place. Play the file in a player you already have. If a player chokes, try another, or remux later. This page does not become a video converter guide.

Output folder is a setting. Put it on a disk with room. Record screen files add up. History in ShareX is the index of recent captures. Use it. Do not dump everything on Desktop.

What record screen is not

It is not a screenshot. A still is a different capture item in the same app. It is not screen brightness. It is not a twin of home named for PC. Home already answers screen recorder. This URL is the verb: record screen.

It is not a promise that every window including protected video will capture. Some apps block capture. If the rectangle is black, that is often the app, not a broken install. Try a different window. It is not a hidden upload unless you configured one. Check After capture tasks.

FFmpeg fetch on first use is part of this recorder, not a virus prompt from a third site. Stay inside ShareX for that step. If Windows SmartScreen appears on the GitHub setup exe, that is Windows talking about an unsigned or newly seen file. Fetch from GitHub Releases, not from a blog mirror.

A short test take before the real one

Record screen fails in boring ways. Wrong rectangle. Mute audio. FFmpeg still fetching. Output folder on a disk that is full. A ten-second test catches those before a one-hour demo. Start. Count to ten. Stop. Open History. Play. If the picture and the sound match what you wanted, do the real take with the same settings.

If the test file is huge for ten seconds, drop the frame rate or shrink the region. If the test file has no sound, change the device in recording options, then test again. Do not stack three changes at once. One change, one test.

Keep the ShareX window off the region you are recording, or it will sit in the take. Pause notifications if you can. Record screen is a picture of whatever is on that rectangle, including toast pop-ups you forgot.

How do I record screen?

Install ShareX with winget install -e --id ShareX.ShareX or the setup x64 exe. Open it. Capture menu, Screen recording. Pick the area. Record. Stop. Open the file. Details are in the numbered list. The install pointer is Install on the home page.

Does record screen upload my video?

Only if you turned on an after-capture upload. Default save-to-disk keeps the file in the output folder. Check After capture tasks if you are unsure.

Can I record screen of just one region?

Yes. Drag a rectangle. That is the usual demo take. Full monitor is the other option when you need the whole display.
